Terrapin Beer Company was born when two brewers met while working together at a microbrewery in Atlanta. Looking around at what other breweries in the SE were doing, Spike and John felt they could make a contribution. Realizing that anyone could make just another pale ale, brown ale or stout, Spike and John set their sights on crafting beers unlike any that were currently available in the SE.

Terrapin introduced its first beer, the Rye Pale Ale in April of 2002. Six months later while only available on draft in Athens, Terrapin’s sole offering won the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. Only six months old, Terrapin had arrived in style!

Since they were going to be making unique beers, Spike and John knew from the beginning that Terrapin Beer Company should be located in a city as distinctive as their brews. What better place than Athens, GA? Both Athens and Terrapin have a great love of music, are committed to the environment, and practice living life to the fullest.

Beer Memories (3)

Describe your fondest Terrapin Beer beer story.

At the Classic Center Brewfest, maybe 2001 (?), we tried a debuting Terrapin. The strong flavorful hops of the Rye Pale Ale made it a big hit - when the crowd dwindled, the only line left was for 1 oz. servings of Terrapin. And it was a considerable line. Alas, I moved to the DC area in the summer of 2002 and didn't see Terrapin again...

...Until it showed up in many varieties in bottles (and a couple on tap) at the Westover Market / Beer Garden in Arlington. Thrilled with the Monster brews, and hoping that the Market brings in the new Left Hand collaboration too. Rock on.

Tried Cap'n Krunkles the other day, great example of a black IPA. The side projects are an awesome idea with excellent execution. Prosit Spike.

Every time I visit Athens it is a must that I stop in to do the Terrapin tours. It is such a great atmosphere and my favorite brewery in the country.

Athens is a heavenly city and how could it not be with Terrapin being brewed there.

Keep the great beers coming!
